Got hold of a really nice piece of Maple and had a bunch of scrap Jatoba so made this table. Motivation for the top design is from all the cutting boards I made for Christmas. This is a present I will send to my mom in the US for her birthday.
Finished with Danish oil and sealed the top with water based poly.
Used a bold edge route to give some closure for the different wood types across the edge, otherwise it would look like a big cutting board.
The glue-up of the top dried with the maple strips having popped up almost 4mm. Too much to sand down and too wide to fit in my planer. I had to rip one of the edges right through the glue line, plane the 2 pieces flat (they then fit) then glue them back together. Worked out well, but I kicked myself for not paying attention.
The leg taper was done on a jig I made that tapers 1cm for each 50cm in length (when tapering 2 of 4 sides) . Not too delicate but adds a fine touch. I tapered the outside 2 sides of the legs, the inside facing ones are left straight. I read somewhere that the opposite correct, but whatever works.
Used 40mm domino floating tenons for connecting the aprons to the legs.
Had to bring the glue up inside as it was too cold in the shop for the glue.
Made the square legs by glueing 2 strips together
Used a simple jig to taper the legs
Gorgeous wood
I love a nice piece of wood
Pre glue up.
All clamped up
